WAKIe TO: Non-invasive cardiac output monitor


  • The esophageal Doppler probe measures non-invasively the blood velocity in the descending aorta.

  • Cardiac output is inferred from the measured blood velocity and from the patient data (age, weight and height).
The following picture shows a normal blood velocity profile in the descending aorta.


The display of the aortic velocity profile and of the real time calculated indices provides reliable information on the main hemodynamic determinants (preload, afterload and contractility) and permits to guide the therapeutic decisions towards a vascular filling or an inotrop treatment.

The figure schematizes the normal velocity profile and those relative to the main circulatory insufficiencies.

  • Hypovolemia is characterized by a reduction of the corrected ejection time (Tcej).

  • Ventricular insufficiency is characterized by a decrease of the maximum blood velocity in the aorta (PV) and by a decrease of the mean systolic acceleration.

  • An increase of afterload is characterized by the association of the previous abnormalities.

Positioning of the esophageal probe

  • There is a Doppler transducer on the tip of the probe.

  • The probe is easily introduced in the esophagus (like a gastric tube) of anaesthetized patients through the mouse or the nose.

  • It is advanced gently until the tip is located approximately at the mid-thoracic level to allow the insonation of the thoracic aorta.

  • Probe position is optimized to generate a clear signal with the highest possible peak velocity.

  • The measurement takes only few minutes.

  • The probe can stay in the esophagus for several hours and monitor continuously cardiac output.

Reusable probe

The probe is reusable and designed to last, so

  • It can be fitted with a better quality Doppler sensor than if it were one use probe.

  • The operation cost of the WAKIe TO is reduced.

  • Protective jackets are available.
